Evan has transitioned out of his crib and into a real bed. What a headache! This happened much sooner than we would have liked but, unfortunately, he had started climbing out of the crib and that was not a good thing. David has a family legend about him falling out of the crib and onto his head so he was determined not to let this happen to Evan. Brynn never climbed out of the crib before we moved her into a bed and, in fact, she only just learned to climb out of Evan’s crib. She would occasionally climb in to play with Ev in the morning but she could not get herself out of it up until about two weeks ago. This obviously inspired Evan and, lo and behold, he began trying and subsequently succeeding. The first time he managed this was very early one morning when we discovered him wandering around Brynn’s room. The next night we put him down to sleep and a little while later we heard a loud thump followed by crying. I went up to find him sitting on the floor, in the dark, with blood running out of his mouth. I’m not sure exactly what was injured but he was a bit shaken up. David decided, then and there, that it was time for a bed.
We headed to Ikea and picked up a convertible bed. It was a truly annoying expedition. We have decided to get Evan a leash. I am not kidding about this.
The crib was subsequently dismantled and the bed was assembled. Oh boy. When we put Brynn in a bed I don’t think it even occurred to her for a month or two that she was able to climb out on her own if she so desired. It took Evan about 20 seconds to figure that out. We put him to bed and closed the door. Instantly he is out and playing with toys on the floor. Rinse and repeat about five times until he finally conks out.
Now every night time is the same. Thankfully, as it is usually somewhat dark, it’s possible to convince him to stay in bed. Although, the other night he covered his entire bed in toys and books and then got sleepy but there was no room so he took his pillow and laid down on the floor to go to sleep. Nap times are a disaster because it’s daylight. There is virtually nothing I can do to get him to stay in bed and fall asleep, and this is a boy who needs his naps. Three hours is normal for him but if it takes me until 3pm to get him to fall asleep then it’s kind of pointless. Yesterday I gave up around 4pm and he ended up skipping it entirely. So basically every afternoon is now wasted as I spend hours trying to get him to nap and Brynn follows me around the house like a conjoined twin. Fun times!
